The medieval quarter is the oldest district of Fougères, the only one who kept his half-timbered houses of the 17th century. It was the district of craftsmen: tanners, cloth merchants and dry cleaners who drew the water of Nançon for their activities. The traditional wash house also welcomed the washerwomen who used ashes of ferns to wash their linen. We find these houses (in particular the House of Savigny (14 and 15th century)) on the place of Marchix, the street of Savigny and the street of Fontaines where was held the first cattle market.
