The theatre was built in 1886 on a plot formerly occupied by the meat market and the cloth market. It was designed by a local architect, Laloy.

Restored in 2001 and named after Victor Hugo, the theater has kept its nineteenth century charm thanks to the warm atmosphere of its decor.
