History of the castle :

The heir to a thousand years of history, the château de Fougères still stands on its rocky islet.

It was however originally only a wooden fort, destroyed in 1166 by Henri II Plantagenet. A new stone castle was then built by Raoul II which set the layout of the current château.

The evolution military techniques reinforced its architecture over 4 centuries : to its battlements, machinations and moats were added the large Melusine and Gobelins towers in 13 th century.

The twin towers named Raoul and Surienne, whose walls are seven metres thick at their base, they are two of the most magnificent late Middle Ages artillery towers built.

The château as it stands today is one of the largest medieval fortress in Europe.
