Medieval Castle of Fougères

The castle is a major element of the historical heritage of Brittany. It was built in around the year 1000, to protect the Breton marchlands against Norman and French invasions.

Emmanuel de la Villéon's Museum

In the last house with timber framings of the 17th century are exposed around thirty paintings of the painter Emmanuel de la Villéon. This artist, born in Fougères in 1858, is one of the last impressionists. He painted Brittany but also likes travelling. He lingers in front of diverse and varied landscapes and paints them. The museum was completely renewed in 2012.

Victor Hugo Theatre

The curtain gets up on the stage of the theatre of Fougeres, for first time in 1886. In 2001, after a restoration as before, it raises again the curtain. Its decor of the end of the XIXth century illuminates a new contemporary programming.

 


The belfry

The belfry of Fougères was the first one built in Brittany, in 1397. It was classified as "Historic Monument" in 1922. It subsite today two belfries in Brittany, one to Dinan and the other in Fougères. The last one is moreover the oldest.

 


Saint-Léonard church

 

The church Saint Léonard, boss of prisoners, is set up for the use of the inhabitants of the New Village in 12th century. Her neogothic facade built in 19th century possesses a rosette which is inspired by that of Saint Chapelle.

 


Savigny house

In the medieval quarter, place du Marchix, the house of Savigny is the oldest house of the town.

To relive the rich hours of the medieval city, stroll on place du Marchix, bordered by half-timbered houses, which accomodated very busy markets in the past.

 


Saint-Sulpice church

The church Saint-Sulpice was built in the middle of the 11th century in the South of the castle. The inhabitants of the rising city had a place of worship independent from the chapel Sainte-Marie of the castle.

 


The Convent of the Urbanist Order

On the trail of the Clarisses Réformées sisterhood, a visit to the Convent of the Urbanist Order is a must. The construction of this classical monument of pure lines was strongly influenced by the flourishing of Louis XIII châteaux in the region.

 


Trompe-l'oeil wall paintings

Demonstrations of this artistic vitality have found their way into the town's fabric. In the rue des Prés and the rue de Verdun, trompe-l'oeil wall paintings will fascinate you. But the painting in the rue du Tribunal that is the most captivating: it depicts a mirror image of the town.

The Little Train

Guided tour around the town. Starting at the bottom of the castle, arriving at the upper part of the town with a stop over in the public garden, then the little train returns to the lower end of town. Lengh of the trip: 45 min.

Bonabry's church

The church Notre-Dame of Bonabry is the last church of Fougères. It is the fruit of the industrial development of the city and its demographic explosion.

 


Morel and Gaté's Industry

The emblem of this company which was one of the most important manufactures of shoes of the city is the cock in reference to the national emblem. The Morel et Gaté factory is visible street of Récollets. Buildings are decorated with rich mosaics of Italian Odorico.

Chateau of la Haye Saint Hilaire

On the edge of the town centre there is La Haye Saint Hilaire Castle which bears witness to some ancient history. Owned by the same family since 1093, its chapel, with houses of the 15th century Flemish-style Virgin and Child, is not the least of its treasures.

Mellé, Borough of the rural Heritage of Brittany

Mellé is a village with valleyed landscapes and fields scattered with "granite balls"; the quarries bear witness to the industrial activity of the region.
The Pierres & Nature centre offers an original way to learn about rural habitat and landscapes: educational and interactive scenography, heritage discovery trail, educational activities, summer programme.

Saint Aubin du Cormier

In Saint Aubin du Cormier, make straight for the castle ruins. They are a reminder of an important event in the history of Brittany. During the battle of the 28th of July 1488, Charles VIII's army, lead by La Tremoille, overcame the Bretons on the plain of La Rencontre and laid siege to the town of Saint Aubin du Cormier.

Castle of Goué 

Within the confines of three provinces: the Maine, Normandy and Brittany, situated on the edge of Fougerolles-du-Plessis, Goué Castle is a very beautiful and imposing building on a promontory dominated by woods and lakes.

 

Rebuilt during the XVIth and XVIIth centuries from an old castle building dating from the XIVth century. The style of its granite architecture reflects the syle of many Breton manor houses.
